Service Learning

“The best leaders are those who take time to serve others.”

Episcopal Day prepares students to be leaders of positive change in the world. All students explore how to be a compassionate neighbor and proactive agent of positive change by diving into grade-level service learning units in the classroom which culminate in hands-on projects. The footprint of Episcopal Day students can be seen and felt throughout the San Mateo community and beyond. 

We invite families to participate in community service through beach clean-ups, volunteering at the food bank, and participating in our many successful drives to extend our love and service to our neighbors. It is through these kinds of projects that our students develop lifelong habits of service.

Service Projects In Recent Years:

Beach Clean Ups (with Pacific Beach Coalition)

Mustangs gather with a collective passion for protecting and preserving our ocean, beaches, creeks, wildlife, and native habitat. Becoming environmental stewards, students and families learn about human-made products, materials, and waste that harm ocean life and what we can do to help.

Halloween at the Peninsula Regent Senior Center

Each year our lower school students sing spooky songs and wear ghoulish costumes to create smiles and warmth among the seniors at the Peninsula Regent Senior Center across the street from Episcopal Day.

CASA Gift Drive 

Every year, school families sign up to provide gifts for the children in foster care in San Mateo County.  For many years, we have provided gifts for every foster child in our region. 

PARCA Halloween Party

Eighth grade students work with PARCA to host a festive Halloween dance which is a special evening for adults with developmental disabilities. Our students enthusiastically embrace the opportunity to work directly with the clients. They chat and dance with the guests in the true spirit of our mission and values, living out inclusivity and service to others.

CASA Holiday Party

The school community hosts a holiday party for children in foster care and their CASA advocates. All of the children come together and celebrate the season's joys.

Samaritan House

Episcopal Day provides lunches and hosts food drives throughout the year to children served by Samaritan House, a local nonprofit that helps meet the needs of low-income families in San Mateo County. Kindergarten through eighth grade students each assemble lunches once during the school year, and lead food drives. We provide an empathy-building curriculum for the lower school that connects with many aspects of the agency’s work.

Bayview Mission

Bayview Mission provides much needed services, food, and supplies to residents of the Hunters Point/Bayview neighborhoods in San Francisco. One Sunday afternoon each year, school families - students and parents - support this Episcopal mission with light gardening, food sorting, and general cleaning.

Habitat Restoration

On a weekend day in the spring, school families remove non-native plants and help preserve the California coastline in Half Moon Bay.

Eighth Grade Global Perspective Project

The eighth grade Global Perspective Project focuses on our partner Kiran Anjali, which supports girls’ education in India. Our students are immersed in learning across all disciplines to understand the causes of poverty, the importance of education, and how they can make a difference.
